There are two important dates in the History
of Laguardia Village, 1164 when Sancho el Sabio
de Navarra gave it the charter to be considered
a village, determining the area or boundaries
and 1486 when the village and the lands of Laguardia
are added to the Alava Fraternity.
The Medieval Town and the Walls were built in
the 13th century. Six hundred years later they
have suffered a great damage as a consequence
of the Independence and Carlist wars. Nowadays
they have been restored and they provide splendour
and history to this village that also has other
hidden treasures that surprise the visitor.

When speaking about Laguardia its normal to think
inmediately about one of the most important source
of income of the village and region, vineyard
plantations. It is located at the base of the
Cantabrian Mountain Range, and it stays on one
of the best lands for vineyard growing in the
wine producing world as it has a microclimate
and an exceptional soil for the plantations. Adding
to this , its inhabitants are devoted exclusively
to the vineyard production. This fact makes the
´tempranillo` grape reach quality peaks
very difficult to reach in other areas. It is
Nowadays nationally and internationally recognized
inside the origin qualification of Rioja.
The
underground of this village is crossed by the
wine cellars of ´Caves`(Cuevas) excavated
under the houses and streets at about 6 metres
deep.

THE CITY WALLS
The village of Laguardia was fortified in
the 13th century.
MAIN SQUARE, TOWN COUNCIL
Busiest spot of Laguardia. There is a shield of
arms on the Town Council façade as well
as a chiming clock with some knuckled figures
that dance parade music punctually at midday and
at 8 in the evening.
SANTA MARÍA DE LOS REYES
A jewel in the crown.
The ornate Gothic facade of Santa Maria de los
Reyes church is 14th century and its polychromy
is in perfect condition and there's much more.
For example La Hoya, the Bronze Age village discovered
in 1935.
The construction of this church started in the
12th century and it was completed in the 15th
century. As a consequence of this, there is a
mixture of styles that can be seen at every corner
of the building.
