A series of sepulcral monuments made of boulders
built with the help from the entire community.
Subsequently, these were covered in order
to ensure the building itself, as well as
the goods kept inside.
Their dimensions vary from small samples to
megalithic monuments. These were made up of
a chamber used to lodge the deceased, a corridor
which allowed access to the tomb and a funeral
mound made with soil and stones used to shelter
the structural. The materials used to build
certain dolmens is wood and small slabs instead
of large boulders.
The dolmens began to surge sometime around
4.000 B.C, and its building tradition spread
quickly. Sometime around 3.250 B.C. Various
dolmens appeared in the Rioja Alavesa landscape,
and were continued to the built during the
following centuris until 2.500 B.C.

HOYA MUSEUM AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE |
AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE...
The archaeological site was discover in 1935
by a Laguardia man. After some research done
on the land its archaeological importance
was stated.
The La Hoya site was occupied for the first
time some 3,400 years ago , during the Middle
Bronze Age. The choice of the setting in a
flat area, no doubt , has to do with an appropriate
setting according the natural resources and
the communication means.
An important defense wall was built surrounding
this settlement that having an approximate
size of 4 Hectares became a remarkable trade
and administration center inside this piece
of land. |

| CULTURAL,
RELIGIOUS AND ART TOURISM |
OVER 10 CENTURIES OF
HISTORICAL...
There are more than ten centuries old places
that used to be spiritual centres , places
to retire and pray and cultural centres. They
were built in country lands far from the decading
Roman cities, in the times of the Visigoths.
They started as caves for the hermits, that
is the example of the Suso Monastery from
the Sixth Century that afterwards became a
small monastery and then a big one, where
an anonimous monk wrote the first words in
Castilian and in Basque, translating a text
from Latin: ´Glosas Emilianenses` (glossary)
from the book nº 60.
The lands of Rioja are full of History through
their Monasteries. There are just some remains
of some of them, that is the example of San
Prudencio Monastery in Laturce Mountain and
the documents that certify its influence throughout
the Middle Ages as repopulation centres and
culture expanders. That is the example of
the San Martín de Albelda and its ´Códice
Albeldense`( Book of Albelda).
However some of them have preserved their
buildings and the activity of their religious
communities through the centuries and they
are now attraction centres for cultural ,
artistic and religious tourism that convert
this route into one of the most remarkable
and consolidated destinations in Rioja. |
